I am a huge fan of mecha genre so I assumed it would be fitting to try and pinpoint exact power level of strongest giant robots in Japanese fiction. We’ll be considering things such as durability, raw power, tactics and, often most important, pilots themselves. Also each pilot gets one entry with its absolutely strongest unit, so sorry Kabuto Koji, but you won’t get 5 iterations of MazingeMazinkaiser in this tier list. Format we are using: Mech (Pilot) – Series – Description HUGE spoilers ahead. Feedback is welcome as I am only human and can make mistakes in assessing power level of certain characters. Emperor Tier – sole member of this tier was going all over the tier list but longer I thought about it, placing it at the very top was only possible solution, no matter how much I would want to meme this tier list with characters in S+. Getter Emperor (Ryoma Nagare, ???) – Getter Robo manga – Getter Emperor is natural stage of progression for every Getter Robo. Straight up strongest competitor in the ring. Getter Emperor is entity that defies laws of physics, rules of time and destroys entire universes by consuming life, energy, technology, matter itself and even souls. Although, it would more fitting to say that Getter itself defines laws of physics and rules of time. You see its energy source - Getter Rays – also happen to the life force guiding evolution. Getter Rays have two other interesting properties, they are building blocks of literally everything and they are sentient. Getter Emperor itself is basically avatar of entire universe trying to evolve, grow in power and become one. Its goal in every universe is the same – to create chain of events which will lead humanity on the path of eternally escalating war, forcing people into embracing Getter Rays. This results in humanity granting them more and more powerful avatar, which ultimately becomes one with universe and annihilates it (also growing in power and wisdom with each universe destroyed). Getter Emperor is a being that infinitely grows in power. Its existence cannot be denied as it can manipulate time itself to direct chains of events in a way it see fitting for its evolution. It’s basically eternal because once it came to be in given universe, it can change history in whatever way it wants (and it absolutely will do it). On top of that it will stomp anything that comes into its path with sheer volume of entire’s universe power. To defeat Getter Emperor you would need to destroy entire multiverse, but even then – Getter can create new universes. Fighting Getter Emperor isn’t “fish trying to kill other fish”, it’s “fish trying to kill entire freaking ocean” and ON TOP OF THAT you are always fighting with Emperor’s rules as it has absolute control over multiverse and its history. If you came to be and managed to challenge Emperor, it’s because Emperor wanted it to happen. Pilot factor only adds to all of this, Ryoma Nagare is a man of action with unbreakable will, who, although reluctant at first, ultimately synchronizes with the will of Getter becoming its perfect pilot. Other pilots seem to interchangeable over time, whether they are Hayato, Go, Musashi, Benkei, but Ryoma himself is single most vital part of Getter and Emperor will make sure that history will play out in a way that lets Ryoma come to be and become one with its greater consciousness. S+ : The Unstoppable – individuals who (due to their specific circumstances) cannot be beaten, no matter how strong of an opponent they face. Mech itself is irrelevant (Chirico Cuvie) – Armored Trooper Votoms – This is the case of pilot factor being so absolutely absurd that it nullifies basically everything else. Chirico’s condition had many names in the franchise. Most often he was called “Perfect Soldier”, but this name is understatement. Either way, this name is used to describe extremely rare individuals who are destined to survive no matter circumstances. Even if world around them is literally falling apart “PS” are able to somehow come unscathed. If by any chance get hurt, they have some sort of healing factor (which was never explored properly). It doesn’t matter what you throw at Chirico, how many people close to him you kill, where in universe you put him, he will come out physically unscathed, most likely walking on a mountain of corpses. Due to his relation with destiny he is human equivalent of unbreakable shield, not always will he win (in fact he rarely actually wins) but he can never truly lose, no matter how many friends he loses, people he sees killed and cities destroyed, he himself will not break. If you throw him into battle royale between all mechs in existence he most certainly will be the last man standing. On top of all of this, he is experienced soldier with godly reflexes and ability to plan ahead of time. Reason why machine doesn’t matter is because he changes mechs more often than other protagonists change socks, so honestly no matter what you give him, he will manage (even if multiverse ceases to be). VF-19 Excalibur Custom (Nekki Basara) – Macross 7 – Another case of pilot factor being ludicrous, but not to the extent of Chirico, and while mech was irrelevant in the first case, here it actually serves a purpose of amplifying pilot factor. Basara is what’s called “Anima Spiritia”, which translates to being person capable of channeling near unlimited life force to influence other people and, because it’s Macross, it means beating people by singing at them. Just so you know what kind of influence I am talking about – this man was able to permanently change the very nature of a species. Twist? We are talking about the species of sociopathic vampiric eldritch horrors from beyond known reality. He is walking embodiment of contagious pacifism. I know I have lost all creditability at this point, but Basara deserves spot here for simple reason – nobody can beat him. I mean, think about it, we are talking about a person who (through basically brute forcing) was able to find good in completely unredeemable pure evil characters and make them unable to fight him. No matter if his enemies have even a shred of humanity, they have basically lost by being unable to continue fighting. To top it all off, he was making pretty sick maneuvers in his valkyrie through the series, so he should be able to just dodge the shit out of most things people can throw at him. The only reason Basara is below Chirico is because he doesn’t have the entire “ultimate survivor shtick” and can actually be hurt. S : Multiversal Horrors – single universe is nothing more than a sandbox to these competitors. Elder God Demonbane (Kurou Daijuuji, Al Azif) – Kishin Hishou Demonbane – destroys multiverse, kills Azatoth, uses universes as shield, has sentient Necronomicon as sub-pilot, yada yada yada. Yes Demonbane is absurdly strong. No, Demonbane can’t defeat Getter Emperor, because (with its multiversal control) Getter would need to allow Demonbane to come to be. Not to mention that with this fight you basically give Getter everything it ever wanted. Main goal of Getter Emperor in its multiversal control and creation of universes is reaching perfection through constant fighting and evolution. You basically give Getter the perfect opponent it hungers for. If Getter can ever reach perfection with its evolution through combat – it’s in this fight and once perfection is reached, well, there is no point in anything existing. With Emperor reaching perfection entire multiverse would collapse, everything would cease to be and Getter would be victorious in its goal. Oh, and there is a chance that Getter Emperor tries to straight up devour and assimilate Demonbane, in which case we reach the same conclusion. Mazinger Zero (Kabuto Koji) – Mazinger Zero – in a way Mazinger Zero is miniature Getter Emperor. It operates on multiversal scale, can regenerate any damage instantly, absorb any form energy, boost its own powerful on a whim, predict future, transform any part of body at will and, to top it all of it, Zero has “Causality Weapon”. This weapon basically means that Zero can look through all the possible solutions of a problem, even ones from alternate realities, use solution it sees fit, and pick a route in which it will win. If chance of success is greater than zero, it will just win. Can potentially outmuscle Demonbane with its shenanigans, although this fight would be so utterly bizarre I prefer to just stick to the fact Demonbane has more firepower. In this case pilot factor is actually only weakness. You see, Mazinger Zero requires Kabuto Koji in order to work, but at the same time Zero is malicious destructive entity that directly opposes Koji’s heroism. The state in which Zero operates at its fullest is when Koji is under complete submission, his mind is devoured and body assimilated, but getting to this point is rather problematic and there are certain opponents that could potentially tear apart this connection. A : Universal Forces – reality can be whatever they want, although it may take multiple steps to change its nature. Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Simon and crew) – Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movie 2 – Has unlimited power, pilots completing it perfectly, but it can operate in single universe and its pocket dimensions. It also doesn’t have smoothest path to its power peak. It requires specific machines to grow bigger and on top of that an assload of additional power, unlike natural evolution (Getter Emperor) or being ready to go by flipping certain switches from the very start (Mazinger Zero). It will stomp on most opponents, but things at the top are both more reliable and more absurd. RahXephon (Ayato Kamina) – RahXephon – It’s very durable, hits hard, can create shockwaves annilating everything in its way and use energy blasts. The reason RahXephon is all the way here is due to single ability – to rewrite history in a way pilot sees fit and knowing how Ayato is fundamentally a good person hating conflict – his opponent would most likely not exist, or live their life happily in a way that doesn’t lead to confrontation. B+ : Space Sweepers – machines capable of spreading destruction through vast areas of space (simply being able to travel through space doesn’t grant this rank). Diebuster (Nono) – Top wo Nerae 2! Diebuster – Oh boy, where to start with this one. Insane size, insane speed, insane raw power, ability to create micro black holes, shreds timespace, defies reality. Nono didn’t really have a toughest fight, so it’s hard to define the exact extent of her abilities. Also extent of powers Controller has are unclear. Potentially (and likely) should be higher on the tier list. Ideon (pilot is irrelevant) – Space Runaway Ideon – the original “overpowered guy” in mecha genre. It’s insanely durable, has near unlimited power source, can annihilate entire fleets with laser massacre, uses micro black hole as weapon, can destroy planets from galaxy away and cleanse universe of complex life. On top of all of it, Ideon can be autonomous on a whim and it possesses its own goals and motivations. If pissed will self-destruct and destroy all complex life in blink of an eye. B : Civilization enders – machines from this tier would be able to end entirety of human civilization in one fell swoop. Dark History Turn A Gundam (Newtype pilot required) – Gundam franchise – So you know how every Gundam has some sort of cool gimmick? Psychoframes, nanomachines, regeneration, crystallization, warping through spacetime and so on? Now put all of these gimmicks in single Gundam, that’s basically what power of Turn A is. We never see true extent of its abilities in anime form, because Lauran was not a Newtype so he couldn’t unlock its power. Turn A’s most destructive weapon is Moonlight Butterfly, which can destroy everything humanity has been working towards in very short span of time through planet-wide disintegration (can go all the way up to solar system scale destruction). Fully developed Devil Gundam (criteria for the pilot aren’t clear) – Mobile Fighter G Gundam – machinery swiftly covering entirety of Earth. Also it has ability to self-modify and self-repair, while being fully automated. To defeat it you either need to be able to destroy planets or defeat it before it reaches its full potential. It’s here just due to sheer scale it can achieve. B-: Heavy Hitters – tier contains pinnacle of mecha combat and destructive close range power. Practically all of them can take on certain enemies from higher tiers and probably win. They follow the same principles, insanely durable, huge destructive power output and amazing pilots, so we’ll skim over these. Genesic GaoGaiGar (Guy Shishiou) – Gaogaigar Final – Probably the heaviest hitter in this category, will most likely wreck both Turn A and Ideon if it gets in “meele” range. Has a plethora of flashy destructive powers, also has “Precursors’ chosen one” buff. Bellcross (Age) – Heroic Age – Can create powerful shockwaves, moves at ftl speed, drains life force out enemies in unspecified area, can use hyper beam with its mouth, survives explosion of freaking Jupiter at point blank range, also has “Precursors’ chosen one” buff. Can be potentially way freaking higher on the list but it didn’t have truly tough opponent to compete against so we don’t really see its absolute peak. Mazin Emperor G (Tetsuya Tsurugi) – Super Robot Wars – using Super Robot Wars franchise is something I tried not to do. However, if we are putting Tetsuya on the tier list, might as well give him his strongest machine. Attacks are less flashy than Gaogaigar’s but seem equally effective. Mazinkaiser SKL (Ken Kaido, Ryo Magami) – Mazinkaiser SKL – least flashy of the four. Can go way higher on the tier list due to pilot factor if theories are correct and these 2 are actually Amon and Satan from Devilman. Other than, it’s “just” Mazinkaiser with its durability and raw power. C : “Reachers” – machines from this tier are able to threaten vast areas at once (either through huge area of attacks, ridiculous speed or some sort of teleportation) on top of possessing destructive power, but still are severely limited by certain factors. ELS Qan-T Gundam (Setsuna F. Seiei) – Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer – Can instantly teleport across universe, defies spacetime, has superspeed, can self-repair, is borderline immortal, oh and is perfectly synchronized with alien hivemind made out living metal. Honestly only reason it’s not higher is because it lacks destructive output as it mostly cuts enemies to pieces. RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Banagher Links) – Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn – can manipulate spacetime in order to revert complicated machinery back into most basic materials. Is loaded with psychoframe, which basically lets it defy reality to a certain extent and has a wide arsenal of conventional weapons (but lacks built-in destructive power). Banagher as Newtype pilot enables these shenanigans and on top of that has heightened senses and typical Newtype shenanigans ranging from telepathy to whatever writers need at the moment. Gunbuster (Noriko Takaya, Kazumi Amano) – Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster – I was really conflicted where on the tier list I should put Gunbuster, but ultimately its lack of durability (without Buster Shield deployed) in comparition to the rest of the participants higher up is counterweight to its destructive power. It doesn’t matter how much you can blow up if you can be just cut in half. Strelizia True Apus (Hiro, Zero Two)– Darling in the Franxx – once again we have a problem of supercharged unit lacking tough fight to truly determine its strength. It can destroy entire fleets, but so can everything else above it. It can move at incredible speed, but so can many others. It is really durable, but so is a huge chunk of competitors. It can be higher on the list, it can be lower on the list. There is nothing making True Apus stick out in this contest (outside of having breasts). D : Destroyers – mechs of this category have destructive prowess but are limited by certain factors making them unable to create widespread destruction. Unmentioned Super Robots (assuming they pack a punch) probably fall into this category as there are too many of them to talk about. Zeorymer (Masato Akitsu, Miku Himuro) – Hades Project Zeorymer – speed, teleportation, huge destructive power output, ability to regenerate itself and unlimited source of power. Its main weakness is that it requires time to channel its ranged attack. EM-CBX007 Villkiss ; Final Battle Variant (Ange) – Cross Ange: Rondo of Angel and Dragon – good deal of speed, meele prowess, ranged destructive power, pilot is a sociopath with aggression issues. Really dangerous combo. Evangelion Unit-01 (Shinji Ikari) – The End of Evangelion – outside of its world ending gimmick Eva is fundamentally a brawler, but does brawling part much worse than its potential opponents. In essence Eva relies on brutal force and lacks tactics or diverse arsenal to match other brawlers who rely on brute force and other things. Also Shinji really screws up many match-ups due to getting scared to death. G-Lucifer (pilot is irrelevant) – Gundam Reconguista in G – it’s on the list only because it has baby version of Moonlight Butterfly (for description look at Turn A Gundam). Its accessibility only makes it better as it can be piloted by basically anyone. Gundam Double X (Garrod Ran) – After War Gundam X – Bare minimum of destructive power needed to get on this tier list. On top of what you would typically expect from a Gundam, this one possesses cannons capable of destruction comparable to nukes. Competent in melee range, but its main gimmick is why it’s even here. E: Insignificant – Everything weaker than weakest machines mentioned on the tier list.

For those of you who don't know, this is my ongoing project to watch and write about all the OAVs on my plan to watch list. This is a very very very long list, it has been over 1 year already! Anyway, I have a twin score rating system. The standard 1-10 is how good I think a show is while the letter score is how much I enjoyed it, whether that is in the way the show intended or not. The letter gradings are as follows:
A=I enjoyed the hell out of it
B=I quite enjoyed that
C=Yeah, I enjoyed that
D=I'm fairly neutral on it
E=I didn't find it all that enjoyable

G=I hated every single moment of time I had to watch that
Seeing that an anime is based off of a work by a famous author is usually exciting, especially when the director is an all-timer in their own right. Sadly these anime can sometimes be a let down and that is what we have here. One Pound Gospel is based off a manga by the legendary Rumiko Takahashi (InuYasha, Maison Ikkoku, Ramna 1/2, and Urusei Yatsura) and it was directed by Osamu Dezaki (albeit under a pseudonym) (Aim for the Ace, Ashita no Joe, and The Rose of Versailles). That should be a match made in heaven but thing just didn’t work out that way. The story of One Pound Gospel follows boxer Kosaku Hatakana as he battles for the survival of his career. The dude loves food. He loves food so much that he has gone up several weight classes and still struggles to stay under the weight limit. Plus, he has issues with eating the night before, getting hit in the belly, and then vomiting all over the shop mid-bout. As such, he is on his last legs when we meet him. However, he meets a young nun, whom the subtitles are very keen to make sure we know hasn’t taken her vow yet, who inspires and encourages Kosaku to do better and to improve himself. This being a Rumiko Takahashi work inevitably Sister Angela and Kosaku start developing feelings for each other. While Kosaku is trying to improve himself, and failing badly, he accidentally punches a gold medal winning boxer in the face who is rightly a bit peeved at him and offers to fight him, giving Kosaku a last chance at his career. This setup isn’t at all bad and allows for a nice mix of sports and romantic comedy tropes. The problems lie with the characters, specifically Kosaku. The dude just has no redeemable qualities to him whatsoever. He breaks pretty much every promise he makes, lies to friends, has no self-discipline, basically sexually assault Sister Angela at one point, and is just generally unlikeable. Yet for some reason everyone continues to support this guys and One Pound Gospel spoilers. I just can’t get behind him and with that the whole show is dragged down. I don’t mind flawed characters but there has to be something latch onto, usually a positive trait. For example, Char Azanble from Gundam may be a psychotic dick head but at least you can understand why he is that way and he is very charismatic, those are the viewer’s latching on points. Kosaku is just a fairly vanilla bloke with nothing redeeming about him. This is a shame because, despite a obviously limited budget, Dezaki directed the hell out of this with his work on Ashita no Joe being obvious in the boxing scenes. It is however, his fault that he didn’t change the source material to make Kosaku more likeable, I am just assuming that Kosaku’s character is the same in the manga. Given Dezaki’s tendency to change up the source material it may actually be entirely his fault and I might be unfairly blaming Takahashi here. In the end I just can’t recommend One Pound Gospel to people. It would be a decent work if Kosaku had any redeeming qualities, but he doesn’t so it isn’t. It really is a shame but this wouldn’t be the first time a single character ruined a show for me. Final score: 4E 129 OAVs down! Also, I have a blog version of this! PART 1: I was really pleased by your kind response to the last old-school shoujo style guide (Oniisama e… / Brother Dear Brother), so I decided to make another one with a show I really enjoy: Ace Wo Nerae! / Aim for the Ace! PART 2:Aim for the Ace! was originally a manga and then became a 1974 anime series. It became a cult hit among a wide range of age groups when it first debuted and has since had a reboot nearly every 10 years: a 1979 theatrical film (which is beautiful), a 1989-1990 direct-to-video series (which is more serious and adult-oriented), and a live-action TV drama in 2004 (which is as cheesy and delightful as the original). I predict that it’s due for another reboot soon. Plot summary: The series tells the story of Hiromi Oka, a high school student who wants to become a professional tennis player. She struggles against lack of self-confidence, performance anxiety, and making the sacrifices required to answer the call to become a champion.
Aim for the Ace! Was made by many of the same creative team members as Oniisama e…, so you’ll note they look really similar. Even when the show had no budget (in the 1970s), you can still see the care and attention given to making it look compelling and beautiful. Pretty Yokohama landscapes, intense lighting conditions - no detail goes to waste. I like that you can see how the style of the individual characters translates from the 1970s to the 1980s-1990s but has the same underlying traits.

HIROMI OKA Hiromi is the protagonist of the series, a classic underdog - the “Cinderella of the Tennis World”. A scrawny 15-year-old who joins tennis to get closer to her idol/crush Reika, but soon discovers a secret love and aptitude for the sport. What she lacks in natural talent, she makes up for in drive and faith in her coach. Her narrative from the 1980s series is a really intense coming-of-age story, so it's fun to see her go from being a semi-bratty teenager to a mature young lady. Style: In the 1970s series, she wears a lot of youthful, colorful styles of the decade. In the 90s series, she wears more tomboyish normcore outfits that are, in my opinion, pretty wearable today. Kind, strong, cheerful. Not a good tennis player - but an excellent friend. She's simple. She keeps Hiromi (and the show) grounded. No matter what insane tennis drama goes on, Maki is there to ask Hiromi if she remembered to eat (and joins her on a trip to get ramen, dim sum, or hamburgers) Style: Colorful! Maki was usually in her school uniform in the 70s series which is a shame, because she would have been perfect for the wilder, more colorful styles. Over the past year or so I have noticed a distinct lack of knowledge about mecha in this subreddit and in the wider community. I love me some giant robots and would, therefore, like to give people a better understanding of this important part of anime. THIS IS NOT A LIST OF SHOWS YOU SHOULD WATCH. Instead, this guide aims to give you a deeper level of knowledge about mecha. I’ll give you a timeline of the development of the genre, with important shows, and I’ll define some terms. I shall also do a bit of myth busting because people seem to believe some very bizarre things about mecha, this is not helped by certain anitubers pushing falsities. Let us begin then!
Definitions and Important Terms
Mecha – Originally the term encompassed any mechanical robot type thing and is still used as such when speaking more generally, I’ll mostly be using this version going forward. When gear heads start getting specific about things they really mean a robot, or biological/magical equivalent, that is piloted from within by a cockpit. This definition excludes non-piloted sentient robots, robots piloted by remote control, or power suits.
Giant Robots – Any giant ass robot, this is fairly obvious. More usually this term is used to distinguish non-piloted sentient bots and remote-control robots, just as Tetsujin 28, from mecha.
Super Robots – Mecha that are basically super heroes. The laws of physics basically don’t exist, weapons are usually outlandish, and there is a good chance that the robot’s power source is inked to the fighting spirit of the pilot. If your robot gets stronger when you shout louder then there is a good chance that it is a super robot. Both the genre and the mecha themselves are referred to as super robots.
Real Robots – In these shows giant mecha are usually mundane and often commonplace. Mecha are an extension of real-life technology and are constrained by the same rules as other technology; they break, they require maintenance, fuel, and similar concerns. They are typically piloted by people who approach it as a job. An effort is usually made to show the implications of giant robot technology on human society (particularly warfare). Both the genre and the mecha themselves are referred to as real robots. - credit to illyrium_dawn for helping me make this one better.
Fusion Robots – This can be one of three things. First it can be a show that features both real robots and super robots, such a Gunbuster. Secondly, it can be a mecha that has elements of both a real and a super robot, such as the Evas in NGE. Finally, it can refer to an extreme crossover with another genre, such as Escaflowne. Both the genre and the mecha themselves are referred to as fusion robots.
Power Suits - These are wearable armours that completely cover the wearer but don’t have a cockpit, Iron Man is a perfect example of this. These tend to be on the edge of what is and what isn’t counted as a mecha, usually they are included just because there is some crossover but with an asterisk next to them.
Gundam – This refers to the franchise start in 1979. It also refers to specific mecha within each Gundam series. There is no set qualification for what is a Gundam, each show has its own rule. However, not all mecha are Gundams despite how some people use the term.
Mobile Suits – In Gundam this is used to referred to all mecha. There are things called mobile armours but they are like a ship/mobile suit hybrid kind of thing and many of those are really hard to class as mecha, so we'll keep those as their own thing. You might find Gundam fans accidently calling mecha from other series mobile suits so don’t get confused!
This is mainly going to be about anime, of course manga and tokusatsu are hugely important early on so they are occasionally included.
1954, October: Godzilla – Founded the idea that giant monsters and stuff could be parallels for the bomb and other problems. Also, popularised live action special effects shows: tokusatsu.
1959, December: Starship Troopers – This book would prove to be the foundation of the Western style of mecha.
1963, January: Astro Boy – The first modern anime and started many of the themes that would carry over into later mecha shows, can something so advanced and so dangerous be good?
1963, October: Tetsujin 28-gou – The first giant robot show. Also introduced the idea that the robot is neutral, it is the operator that decides if it is good or evil. This and Astroboy set up the child Vs. adult themes in a lot of mecha. As far as I know this was also the first anime to air in America.
1966, July: Ultraman – Codified that episodic monster of the week setup that would be seen in countless tokusatsu, super robot, and magical girl shows going forward. Also, a massive influence on mecha simply because a lot of creators are big fans of it, such as Hideaki Anno.
1972, December: Mazinger Z – The first giant robot show where it is piloted from within the machine. Used the Ultraman formula to great success, making that formula the dominant show style for mecha during the 1970s. Kouiji Kabuto is the original hot headed hero, a trope that will define super robot shows going forward. Finally, it introduced the idea of the pilot suit
1973, July: Super Robot Red Baron - The first tokusatsu show to have a giant robot instead of a giant person.
1974, April: Getter Robo – The first combining mecha, also Getter Robo had multiple different forms. Getter 2 is the origin of drill weapons in mecha, a popular trope.
1974, September: Great Mazinger – Jun Hono is, as far as I am aware, the first mixed-race main character in anime. She is certainly the first half black main character in anime.
1974, October: Space Battleship Yamato – The first hard-ish sci-fi anime, so much so that they actually had to explain what sci-fi was to the staff. This paved the way for real robots and space operas down the line.
1975: Start of the super robot boom
1975, April: Brave Raideen – The first transforming mecha (rather than combiner). It was the first mecha to have literal magic involved. Also, this was the first mecha that Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on.
1975, October: Steel Jeeg – Massively upped the ante in the merchandising department, with the help of toy company Mego it formed a major part of the Micronauts line. It also became a massive hit in Italy.
1976, April: Dino Mech Gaiking – The first time a mecha show’s protagonist was a psychic.
1976, April : Goliath the Super Fighter - It introduced the Gatchaman style five member team to mecha, something that tokusatsu would pick up on later. It was also the first mecha to have the lead pilot be a woman
1976, April: Combattler V – The start of Tadao Nagahama’s Robot Romance Trilogy which massively upped the ante in terms of storytelling in mecha, adding more internal drama to the protagonists and better fleshing out the antagonists. Combattler V was first mecha where robot was designed around toys, as such the various parts combined in a comprehensible manner for the first time. It also helped popularise the 5 man team style of mecha show because, unlike Goliath the Super Fighter, it wasn't rubbish.
1977, January: Yatterman – The first real comedy mecha. It featured much lower stakes than the other shows of the time. Gave the main antagonist unprecedented amounts of character development. Introduced the 3 person bad guy group, consisting of a female lead and two idiot guys, that would become a staple of anime, Pokemon’s Team Rocket is one example of such a team.
1977, June: Voltes V – Part two of the Robot Romance Trilogy. Was the first mecha villain written as the hero in his own story rather than just a bad guy for the hell of it (though Combattler V was getting there). This was the first time that people wrote into the TV station to request that the villain wasn’t killed off at the end of the series.
1977, October: Zambot 3 – Yoshiyuki Tomino’s first full mecha series and the first time he lived up to his nickname. It was a big step towards to real robot and was the first time a mecha show had a tragic ending.
1978, April: Toushou Daimos – The final part of the Robot Romance Trilogy.
1979, Febuary: Battle Fever J – The first Super Sentai show to have a giant robot, following the inclusion of one in the Spider-Man show of the previous year.
1979, April: Mobie Suit Gundam – The first real robot show. Weapons were all as lethal as real world weapons, deaths were a regular occurrence, death was permanent, characters weren't always heroic, it was a real war rather than a monster attack, attempts were made to make the robots follow the laws of physics, etc. The first mecha to feature life or death battles between humans, Yatterman had human on human conflict but it was never life threatening. Created the Char archetype.
1980, May: Space Runaway Ideon – Once again the level of violence in mecha was raised by Tomino, though the films in 1982 would go even further. It was also a direct influence on Anno both in content and release structure.
1981, March: Beast King GoLion – Not important in Japan but was hugely popular when it made its way to the west as Voltron. Not since Gigantor and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot had giant robots been on American television and so it made a huge impact, creating the first real wave of anime fans in the United States (along with Starblazers a few years earlier).
1981, March: Mobile Suit Gundam Movie I – The first film in the film trilogy version of the original Gundam that, alongside the move to model kits over fully built toys, actually made the show popular.
1981, October: Fang of the Sun Dougram – The second real robot show and it took things even further in the real direction, paving the way for shows such as VOTOMS and Flag later on. In addition, this was Ryouske Takahashia’s first mecha directing gig.
1982, October: SDF Macross – The first mecha where the mech are fairly replaceable, instead of being an advanced prototype or something. It popularised love triangles. It helped popularise transforming mecha, along with Transformers, and we can see the obvious influence on shows such as Zeta Gundam. It pushed the idea of sticking random extra elements, like idols, into mecha shows. It was the first mecha show created by fans for fans, something that would be a staple of studios such as Gainax. Finally, it had a very early example of an interracial couple with Roy and Claudia.
1983: Beginning of the real robot boom.
1983, February: Aura Battler Dunbine – The first fantasy mecha series and the first bio-mechanical mecha.
1983, October: Round Vernian Vifam – The first TV anime to have its opening be entirely in English.
1983, December: Dallos – The first non-hentai OAV.
1984: The super robot genre pretty much died here for a while due to real robots and Transformers.
1984: BattleDroids – This long running RPG franchise is one of the main influences on the western style of mecha and began right here in 1984.
1984, February: Heavy Metal L-Gaim – Nagano pioneered a new style of mecha design here: an inner frame with ‘hanging external armour’. This would go on to be a very popular design philosophy going forward.
1985: Robotech – The combination of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada that for many was the first series serial cartoon they’d seen. Along with Starblazers and Voltron it created the first wave of the anime fandom. It was also the genesis of the whole Harmony Gold debacle: FUCK YOU HARMONY GOLD!
1985, March: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam – Tomino once again takes the real robot genre to new depths of violence, depression, and seriousness. This is arguably the peak of Gundam and Bandai-Sunrise has certainly been trying to emulate ever since.
1985, March: Megazone 23 – This OAV, I’m mainly talking about Parts 1 & 2 here because the Third is its own bizarre thing, was the first real smash hit OAV. It broke open the floodgates and helped bring about the OAV boom. It also probably inspired Meta Spoilers
1985, July: Transformers: Generation 1 – Transformers essentially completely takes over the kids mecha show demographic and only when it declined in quality would we see the super robot renaissance of the 90s. It also was one of the first major Western co-productions in the mecha genre. Many of these were never actually aired in Japan and the resources they took up are one of the factors in the decline of mecha during the second half of the 80s. The toy line that began in 1984 was jointly responsible, with Macross, for the popularity of transforming mecha.
1987: The genre is kind of in crisis mode here as only 2 TV mecha shows started this year, with one being a sequel.
1987, February: Metal Armour Dragonar – The first time Sunrise essentially tried to copy Gundam, they would do this again and again and again.
1987, February: Bubblegum Crisis – This is arguably the genesis of the modern harem genre, as we know it today, as it was the direct inspiration for Tenchi-Muyo. This came from the idea of making Mackey the lead of Bubblegum Crisis and the rejected episodes that were to be more light-hearted.
1988, April: Patlabor – The final member of the big 4 real robot shows. It really helped pioneer the idea of putting mecha in situations other than war.
1988, October: Gunbuster – The start of Hideaki Anno’s career and, along with Zeorymer, kickstarted the fusion genre.
1989, April: Mado King Ganzort – Arguably started the super robot renaissance of the 90s by combining traditional super robot fun with some of the more serious narrative components that real robot had refined.
1989, July: Patlabor: The Movie – This and the second movie were essentially Oshii’s dry runs for Ghost in the Shell.
1990, February: The Brave Fighte Exkizer – The start of the Braves (Yuusha) franchise which was one of the dominant mecha franchises of the 90s. Almost every kids super robot show made after the Braves franchise has been made in the vein of the Braves franchise. This is the one that really kicked off the super robot renaissance as it actually got kids to watch it like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo did back in the day.
1991, February: Getter Robo Go – The start of the super robot reboot/sequel trend of the 90s and 2000s, this was no doubt spurred by the economic crash.
Late 1991 to early 1992 – The Japanese asset price bubble collapse and the subsequent economic crash that began the Lost Score – This may be the second most important event in anime history after Astroboy. It effects everything made after it right up until today, I mean everything. Keep this in mind at all times going forward.
1992, April: Energetic Bomb Ganbaruger – An early example of just how weird and out there the fusion era could be. It paved the way for things like Magic Knight Rayearth later on.
1994: Bandai buys Sunrise.
1994, March: Genocyber – Probably the height of non-hentai gore in anime.
1995, April: Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – One of the first mecha shows to really target women, in a more fujoshi sense of things with the pretty boy pilots, and was instrumental to the Toonami era anime boom in America.
1995, October: Neon Genesis Evangelion – While not too out of line for what mecha was doing at this point it did obviously influence things going forward. But as it is essentially Anno’s Ultraman fan fiction it is a bit weird to talk about it in the context of mecha, though of course tokusatsu and mecha anime are super closely related and there is massive crossover between the two. Really its biggest contribution to mecha was visually, with some character archetypes (notably Rei and Shinji), and shows basically trying to be clones of it.
1996, October: Martian Successor Nadesico – The first real big example of something that would become a key part of 2000s mecha shows: lots of fanservice. Fanservice had of course always been around but not in this sort of way and not so much in TV mecha shows. Ruri was also quite influential character, popularising the cute moe girl who is jaded and sarcastic archetype.
1997, February: King of Braves GaoGaiGar – Many consider this to be the greatest pure super robot show ever made and most kids super robot shows going forward are explicitly following GaiGaiGar’s style and formula.
1998, April: Brain Powerd – The first Evangelion clone, despite Tomino’s claims otherwise.
2002, October: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED – This was a mega hit and set the standard for 2000s real robot shows. It also may have led to the release structure of Code Geass and Gundam 00 with how Fullmetal Alchemist interrupted the merchandising between SEED and its sequel.
2004, October: Diebuster – Visually set the style for many mecha shows that came after it, especially in how the mecha moved.
2006, October: Code Geass – The first split season mecha show that Sunrise did, something that they would do from now on. These usually have a story in the first season that is completed and essentially self-contained apart from a few twists and hooks at the end that set up a sequel story to be told in the second season.
2008, April: Macross Frontier – This pushed the quality of CG mecha up a notch and was instrumental in the growth of CG mecha.
2010, March: Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn – Sunrise’s first movie series Gundam release, this would be followed by Gundam The Origin and Gundam Narrative.
2013, April: Meta Spoilers – Breaks out into the mainstream in a way that hasn’t been seen in a long time. Is a big part of the growing popularity of anime in the west over the mid to late 2010s.
Just be aware that this timeline doesn't cover everything, though if I've forgotten something major feel free to tell me as I'm not infallible.
Myths and Questions
Bandai-Sunrise’s cash cows have been Love Live and [email protected] not Gundam in recent years
Nope, just not true at all. If you actually look at Bandai’s annual reports you can see that Gundam is usually their highest grossing IP and that neither Love Live nor [email protected] are ever mentioned in those highest grossing lists, which they would be if they were the cash cow some claim.
NGE, TTGL, and Code Geass are so different from other mecha shows, that is why I like them and not other mecha
No they really aren’t. As I said before, NGE was in line with some of the fusion shows that came out around it, despite its origins being in live action. In any case, there are so many Eva clones at this point it would be hard to call it different. TTGL is a love letter to super robots and so has very little in it that is actually original, you can pretty much just boil most of the show down into Getter Robo X Gunbuster. As for Code Geass, well it very much falls in line with where the genre was at that that point. Just compare it to its sister show, Gundam 00, and one can see that it isn’t actually all that different in terms of tone and content, it just goes even further with the kitchen sink attitude of shows like Full Metal Panic. Like so many mecha shows before it you could take out the mecha entirely and it would still work.
Mecha shows are always about war, and usually are in space
While this certainly covers a large portion of mecha, thanks to the influence of Gundam on real robots, it does do a disservice to how flexible mecha are. Hurricane! Iron Leaguer is a sports show, Patlabor is a cop comedy show, the Patabor movies are political thrillers, Macross Plus is Topgun with a more melancholy romance, and egend of the Blue Wolves is gay porn. This is to but name a few shows but we can already see how varied things can be. Yes, your big name franchises do fall into the space opera/war genres a lot of the time but if you do a bit of digging you’ll find there is a lot more stuff out there.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a deconstruction of the mecha genre
Now this one is complicated so I'm not going to go into huge detail. To put it simply: NGE is essentially Anno's Ultraman fan fiction. The show is packed full of Ultraman references and parallels, it is also full of old robot show and Gerry Anderson references but not to the same degree. Anno and the people working at Gainax at the time have somewhat confirmed this (44min mark) and if you've seen some of the early Ultraman shows then it is super obvious. Of course it is somewhat commenting on mecha and playing with mecha, it would be too simple to say it is just one thing, but in many ways that comes secondary to the Ultraman stuff and Anno expressing his depression. Also, the creator of Ultraman was a Christian convert, just keep that in mind.
Power of friendship is something I've seen people rag on in battle shounens, but some of the mecha anime I've seen use some form of the power of believing in yourself to get the mechs to work. Why is that such a prevalent trait (if it is actually prevalent) or at least where did that trope start? - Smartjedi
This is a very super robot thing and it all really comes back to Go Nagai as far as I know. He created the super robot genre with Mazinger Z and there shouting louder made you stronger though narratively there was photon energy. This would then be reinforced by Getter Robo, where Getter Rays were more directly tied to a person’s fighting spirit. This idea of ‘the pilot's will’ just carried on from there in both live action and in anime. When teams came along in anime this idea was spread to more of a team will sort of thing, the Neflix Voltron is actually great example of this despite not technically being an anime. So, I wouldn’t call it the power of friendship per se as it applies to singular pilots as well.
I have heard that the economy has much to do with when a mecha show is or was produced, because they are more expensive to animate. How do you feel about this statement, is there truth to it? - thecomicguybook
I wouldn’t exclusively say more expensive to animate but rather they tend to be larger productions as a whole. Most mecha are anime originals and so need a longer production lead time to write the story, create character designs, create world designs, create mechanical designs, etc. They also lack a ready built fanbase unlike shows based on sources. Just like any other anime original project this makes them inherently a far riskier investment than an anime based on an original source. In addition, most of the people who can design and animate mecha work in video games or at Sunrise and so hiring the people to make your mecha show is harder. This just makes them an unappealing option for most investors. Back in the day, however, there were toys. Toys funded everything in mecha. But then video games came along and Bandai tightened their grip on the model kit market. So now kids tend not to buy action figures of their favourite robots and it is hard to get people to buy your model kits because Bandai is so dominant in the market. That all leads us to today where a mecha show simply isn’t a good option if you want to make money. An adaptation is an easier production to make with a ready made audience, and toys simply can’t make up the difference any more.
I'd like to see an explanation of why transformations are such a big deal - keeptrackoftime
Macross had them because they were cool and Transformers had them to sell toys. Both of those franchises where stupidly successful and so everyone copied that…also transformations are cool. Same thing goes for combining mecha, just replace Macross and Transformers with Getter Robo.
Staff and Background This little known OAV is based on an equally little known manga by Makiko Hirata, so little known that I only found out about it via this fansite. What is important about this OAV is that it is directed by Osamu Dezaki, aka maybe the greatest anime director ever. He is the man behind Aim for the Ace, Tomorrow’s Joe, the Black Jacks OVAs, and Brother, Dear Brother. Not everything he makes is great, or even good, but they are always interesting and he was always trying to push the medium. I want to give a shout out to Iquix Subs for this one. IIRC there were some really shitting Hong Kong subs for this back in the VHS days but those have since been lost and we have been without English subtitles for this show ever since, I believe Arabic ones are available bizarrely. Iquix Subs have recently been working on this and are close to releasing the fansubs into the wild, well hopefully close anyway! But they were kind enough to give me their rough work in progress subs to watch this show with, which was nice. So big shout out to them for working on this kind of project as it is crazy that anything Dezaki had no subs! Story and Characters This show is a romance drama set in 1923 Tokyo. Many of you may know that that year heralded a certain event, that does play into the show, but it also was a year of love and bizarre decisions apparently. Akiko is a wealthy heiress who is engaged to a ‘boring’ but generally good guy, so unsurprisingly she is bored out of her mind. One day she and her maid, Sara, go into a rougher part of town where they encounter some thugs. They are saved from these goons by Taka (the one on the left) who is an up and coming Yakuza. Akiko falls desperately in love with him seemingly because he is so different from everything else she knows. So she hatches a plan. She knows Sara fancies her fiancé so she tries to hook them up leaving her free to go after Taka. Things don’t exactly work out and what we end up with is a bit of a mess of people randomly falling in love for no apparent reason as well as being dicks. Just take Akiko; she saw met Taka maybe 3 times in the whole show and yet she pined over him desperately the entire time. I mean, he wasn’t even nice to her when they met! It doesn’t help that the ending is so open and anticlimactic. In fact it is kind of infuriating. Character A is in Shanghai waiting for character B. Character C knows character A is in Shanghai and meet character B, they then proceed to not tell B that A is in Shanghai and instead seemingly tries to get it on with B despite never showing all that much interest in them! Nothing is fucking resolved and characters act like dicks! This is a shame because that first episode is really strong and sets up the characters well but as it goes along it seems like the author didn’t know where the story was going and so things just happen. The show still manages to have some really emotionally gripping moments though so I do think it is worth watching. Though, the show is quite slow at times, despite moving super quick at others, so if that isn’t your thing then you’d best avoid this. Audio and Visuals The visuals on this thing, even on what I believe to be a VHS rip, are beautiful. As always, Dezaki’s partner in crime Akio Sugino created some wonderful character designs that really shine with personality. In addition, Dezaki’s brilliant visual direction made the story easy and engaging to follow even with rough subs, I didn’t really need subs at all except for some of the finer details. The animation wasn’t the greatest ever but the show didn’t demand it and when great animation was needed the show brought it’s a game. On the audio front, I thought the voice acting was pretty good all around. The VAs all played right into that slight (or not so slight at times) melodrama that Dezaki loves and there were some fantastic passionate deliveries at times. What was a disappointment was the music. All the tracks were actually really good, with the main theme perfectly capturing the feel of the show. Unfortunately, there seemed to be all of about 3 pices and so you were sick to death of them by the second episode. Conclusion Nightsong of Splendour is a disappointment but I do think it is still watching. The characters are kind of a mess in terms of their decisions and actions but despite that I was still compelled to follow them and see how everything would play out. Sadly, that ending left a bitter taste and so I can’t say that this show is good. It is still worth watching to see Dezaki’s masterful directing but even he can’t make these characters make sense. 4/10
Staff and Background California Crisis is, as far as I know, an original work by Mizuho Nishikubo who has had a long and varied career. He was an episode director on The Rose of Versailles whilst also directing Video Girl Ai, Giovanni’s Island, Otogizoushi, and The Mysterious Cities of Gold. He also directed a ton of meh to crap stuff too, but you’ll likely not have heard of it so I won’t bother mentioning them. Overall he does seem like a decent director when he is given a chance, though considering this show maybe he needs some restraint. Review California Crisis doesn’t really have a story if we are going to be honest. You could say that it starts with a deadbeat named Noera (which seems to come from the Tomino school of randomly bashing a keyboard to come up with character names) getting drunk in his mate’s bar in San Diego where he hears an odd noise. The next morning he is driving to LA for job when he and a girl named Marcia get rammed off the road by a truck that is being chased by people in 4x4s with bazookas. Somehow Noera’s car survives falling off a cliff so he manages to run away and he lets Marcia tag along. It turns out that Marcia has stolen a weird orb from the back of the truck in the two seconds between them hitting the ground and them running away. The US military and the Soviets (though I’m not sure we actually ever see them) then chase our duo all the way to Death Valley. Why Death Valley? Because Marcia and Noera touched the orb in a diner and had a mysterious vision of Death Valley, after which Marcia declared it was the American Dream and they must go to Death Valley. That is the plot of the OAV, can you see why I said it doesn’t matter? That setup is pretty much the first 5-10 minutes while the rest is the chase to Death Valley. Though spoilers So yeah, if we aren’t here for the plot are we here for the characters? Ummmmmmmm no. Noera is an alcoholic tsundere whilst Marcia just loves her orb, there isn’t much else there. So why are we here? Because this shit is nuts and looks insane! California Crisis is clearly the result of someone having watched a ton of movies and music videos and then trying to create a production around that idea of LA that they had from these. It is stuffed to the gunwales with pop culture stuff, like a Hardrock Café, and other general California stuff, like big cars and the geography. If anything, they really should have ditched the chase stuff and the plot and instead have made this a long music video full of stuff they thought was cool. This show is quite enjoyable if you watch it in that way but imagine if they had made the whole show like this! I suppose this is as good a time as any to talk about the visuals. First off, the animation is really bad. It is super choppy and a lot of the time the backgrounds feature little to no detail. There are a few nice cuts and the above sequence is fairly smooth but overall it is quite poor. On the other hand, the art design is something I quite like. Nothing, and I mean nothing, looks like California crisis. Those character designs are super cool, though Marcia isn’t the prettiest design to be honest, with their heavy shading and defined lines. I just love when stuff looks so different and so out there, it is just so freaking cool! In addition, all the neon and night scenes perfectly capture that 80s idea of LA as a glamorous but slightly dangerous party town. These visuals ar helped by a dope OST done by none other than the great Miho, because if you want your show to be cool in the 80s you get Miho to sing some songs for it. The soundtrack is genuinely top tier and is just a great little listen. Conclusion So yeah, that was less a review and more just rambling about California Crisis, the show is so bizarre that it is hard to talk about it normally. It certainly isn’t good and if you go into it trying to watch it as a show then you are going to be bored stuff. But what it is great for is to throw on as some background noise that you look at every once in a while because the visuals and the sound are totally worth it. I totally recommend reading Justin Sevakis's thoughts on this show. 2/10 85 OAVs down! Also, I have a blog version of this now! I haven't transferred everything across but I am working on it. Hey guys, welcome to yet another week of my great OAV watch. This is my little project of watching all the OAVs on my PTW list...all 170+ of them. I've been having exams this week so only 1 show this time around, sorry.
Staff and Background Queen Bee is an entry in the long running Golgo 13 franchise. Golgo 13 is the longest running manga ever, having been going since 1968, and it is still very popular. Surprisingly it hasn’t had that many adaptations. There have been 2 live action films, one in 1973 and one in 1977 (the 1977 version features the legend that is Sonny Chiba). There has also been one anime film, by the same team that made Queen Bee, and a TV series. Not many adaptions for one of the most popular characters of all time. The OVA was directed by Osamu Dezaki, who is arguably the best anime director of all time. He directed Aim for the Ace, Ashita no Joe, Black Jack, Nobody’s Boy Remi, The Space Adventure Cobra Movie, Rose of Versailles, and more. The man is a fucking powerhouse of anime directing. Working with him on this one is Akio Sugino, who worked as a character designer and animation director on a large number of Dezaki’s as well as Legend of the Galactic Heroes. This is a really stacked base to work off of, but does the OAV live up to expectations. Story and Characters The story of Queen Bee is exactly the same as any other Golgo story ever: Golgo is hired to kill someone and then goes about doing said hit. In this case his target is Sonia, aka Queen Bee. She is part of a South American rebel group who are smuggling drugs into the USA to fund themselves. Golgo is hired to kill her by an associate of politician who is running for president, with one of his major campaign focusses being a war on drugs. Unsurprisingly things aren’t exactly all that they seem to be. The plot isn’t great to be honest, you kinda get what is going on but they leave a lot for you to just assume. However, it was enough to get you through the show and at no point was I bored or uninterested. Golgo, as per usual, isn’t really a character. See the thing with Golgo 13 is that we know almost nothing about him despite the fact the manga has been going since 1968, hell we don’t even know his real name. A Golgo fan could tell exactly how Golgo would move through a building, where he’ll stand in a room, how he’ll react to a certain situation, etc. because Golgo is so thorough and so methodical in nature. However, a Golgo fan could never actually tell you what Golgo is thinking, what he likes, what he dislikes, his feelings, etc. This isn’t helped by the fact he has literally one facial expression for all activities, be it shagging hookers so well they pay him or blowing a dudes brain out. Despite how it sounds, it actually makes for quite an interesting character as one is always trying to figure him out. As with many Golgo stories, Golgo is not really the main character, Sonia is. Sonia is pretty interesting. You expect her to be one thing but then she is in many ways something totally different. I think it would have been better if she wasn’t having sex every 5 minutes (slight NSFW) but then it wouldn’t be Golgo 13, plus I think it did actually work with her character to a degree. But they made some very weird choices with her character in the latter stages of the show that I don't think worked. I should probably mention at this point that there are about 6 sex scenes in this show despite it only being 56 minutes long, there are 4 in the first 15 minutes alone! The rest of the cast were a bit meh to be honest. The politician dude was an alright character but in general there just wasn’t enough screen time for the rest of the cast. Audio and Visuals The visuals on this one are a bit weird. There is a lot of quite nice animation in it but a lot of the action feature repeated pans or bits of animation. This very much seems like a directorial choice rather than a ‘oh shit we ran of time so just repeat it’ choice. I’m not really sure it works and it was quite distracting at times. The general art style was really dope though and the animation itself was often of a high quality. The voice acting was all pretty good and the soundtrack was good too, I love the ED. Conclusion It is Golgo 13, if you like Golgo 13 then you’ll like this and if you don’t like Golgo 13 then you won’t. It is pulpy adult action full of sex and violence. Its narrative flaws, dodgey choices for Sonia, and the weird visual choices do keep my rating down on this one, but I still had a blast with it. 5/10 41 shows down!

Honestly, I don't give a shit if you have or haven't. But they've made some pretty damn good anime in their time, and I want to watch some of it. What I need to know, is do you fucks want to watch it with me? We'll start with Neon Genesis Evangelion, the story of a lonely boy and his struggles with daily life, which I'm sure plenty of you can relate to. Obviously, we'll do an immediate follow up with End Of Evangelion because you haven't seen Evangelion until you've seen the End of Evangelion. It picks up at the End of Evangelion (no shit), where we focus on a few of the lonely boy's specific struggles, like strangulation and ejaculation. We'll hop on over to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Since there's already an April rewatch planned for this series, we're just going to join them for their viewing of the TTGL movies, Gurren-hen and Lagann-hen. TTGL tells the story of a lonely boy and his struggles with the concept of "well how big can it be"? Staying with this lighting fast pace, we'll follow up mecha and mecha with mecha and mecha. Gunbuster, is what happens when you give Anno a storyboard and he doesn't want to kill himself. It's the story of a lonely boy girl, and her struggles of living in the future of the late 80s. We'll follow up with it's sequel, Diebuster, which follows a different lonely girl and her struggles in the future of the future of the late 80s. Now, we'll opt for le hidden gem, Magical☆Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. If you've heard of this, omedetou, if not, that's fine too. It's Anno, it's Imaishi, I think you're probably going to like it. It's the story of a lonely boy and his struggles in window shopping. Staying off the beaten path, we'll watch His and Her Circumstances, a love story by none other than Hideaki Anno. Frankly, I think that's all I have to say on the matter too. You're already sold. Next, we'll hit Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, a more well known title than our previous 2, which tells the story of a lonely boy, your run of the mill catholic priest, and two angels who have a job they're not very good at. Finally, we'll do FLCL. Hopefully by the time this rolls around we'll have more info on the new season coming out this year, and maybe we'll even end up with excellent timing for a FLCL rewatch before its sequel. FLCL is the story of yet another lonely boy, and his struggles, particularly with his hardon. With that out of the way, I'll refer back to my previous question. Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Studio Gainax? I thought not. It's not a story the normies would tell you. It's a weeb legend. Studio Gainax was an animation studio so powerful and so hype inducing, they could use animation to influence their staff to create... good anime. They had such a knowledge of animation, they could even keep the staff they cared about from being unemployed. Animation is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. But they became so powerful, the only thing they were afraid of was losing their power which, eventually of course, they did. Unfortunately, they taught their staff everything they knew. Their staff killed them in their sleep. Ironic. Now you might be wondering. Where is that staff now? Well that's where part two of the rewatch begins. From the ashes of Gainax rose Studio Trigger. And that's where we begin again, with high impact sexual violence, Kill la Kill. We'll watch the series and the ova that followed, for this story of a lonely girl and her struggles with exhibitionism. From there we'll blast through the Trigger shorts, with Inferno Copu, Ninja Slayer From Animation, and the animator expo short SEX and VIOLENCE with MACHSPEED, before hitting up Trigger's answer to the MCU Space Patrol Luluco. And finally, finally, to end it all, we've got none other than the man, the myth, the legend, Hideaki Anno, with his Studio, Khara. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo The epic, unfinished, retelling of Evangelion. Hopefully by the time we get here, 3.0+1.0 has a release date. It begins with Eva, and it ends with Eva. You don't have to watch it all. I realize I've just listed 16 or so anime that I'm proposing we watch, but as long as some of you, want to watch some of these, I think this is gonna be really fun. I'm thinking we do an episode a day, at least for the shows with a standard length. The last two episodes of Evangelion will be watched on the same day, each movie will be it's own day, and each of the Trigger shorts will be done in a day. We'll have a recap/break day after each big series, which means we'll be going to the August 4th or so. I'd also like something set up on the discord for this, for those that use it, but that's really up to the mods. And that's all I got for ya. Let's aim for the top, and get this thing going. I just wanted to be safe rather than sorry. However, I’m pretty sure that there are no real spoilers, so don't worry. Hello and welcome to my big fat mecha-mendation guide! This is the sequel to my ‘Why you should take another stab at Mecha shows.’ from about a month back. Hopefully this will give those of you who have yet to really get into mecha shows a bit of help. Up first I’ll just list some must see shows and then afterwards I have a number of different sections for various different types of shows, with more detailed reviews of each show and why you should watch them. The must see shows! These are the shows that are important to mecha history and will give you a good starting point. -Neon Genesis Evangelion -Gunbuster -Gundam 0079 -Do You Remember Love? -Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket -The Vision of Escaflowne -Space Runaway IDEON -Giant Robo: The Animation -FLCL -Patlabor: The Early Days Here are the sections so you can search Hype Mature Thriller The Most Anime Anime that ever Animed Eye porn Weird Fantasy Comedy Sports Romance Misc Now then, let's begin: I want something Hype, a bit silly, and full of heart Gunbuster/Diebuster This is split into two series each are 6 episodes long. So we’ll begin with Gunbuster.
Quick Hits: Space, 80s, emotional, super robot, hard sci fi, music, animation, short, important
Plot: In Gunbuster we follow a young girl called Noriko as she trains to be a mecha pilot to fight in the war against the space monsters. The first half is mostly world building while the second half is hype and heart.
Pros: Gunbuster is one of Anno’s earlier works and is also the spiritual predecessor of TTGL, that should give you some idea of what it is like. It features such silly things as mechas doing press ups but it also features super hype fights like this. Did I mention that this show is from the 80s? Because it is super 80s and it is fantastic. The show itself has great animation and sound, with the Gunbuster itself being an all-time mecha design. The show also has one of the best endings of all time, I cry every god damn time I watch it. Also, Coach is an absolute boss of a character. Noriko is the bomb by the way.
Cons: It does have a few drawbacks though: if you don’t like the 80s then this show might be a little off putting and there is a certain male character who should have been introduced earlier in the show.
Now for Diebuster
Quick Hits: Animation, music, insane, super robot, large, mecha designs, short
Plot: In Diebuster we follow a young girl called Nono in her quest to go into space and become topless, the topless are a special group of individuals who pilot mechs and fight space monsters. From there shit gets insane, like TTGL insane.
Pros: This thing looks amazing; it truly is one of those shows that takes advantage of the fact it is animated. It is unsurprising really when you realise that it was directed by the guy who did FLCL. Much like Gunbuster it has a fantastic soundtrack, though this is partly due to the fact that they share a lot of the same pieces. Additionally, this show has the most iconic use of the Gainax pose, which is pretty fun.
Cons: It tries a little too hard to make you remember that it is in fact a sequel to Gunbuster. It just lacks that undefinable X factor that makes a truly great show great. Not really helpful I know. Also, the ending relies a tad too much on Gunbuster. I don’t want to bash it too hard because I do love it.
Conclusion – Watch GunbusteDiebuster if you want something with the madness of TTGL but with an emotional depth closer to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Gurren Lagann You’ve all probably seen this but I I’ll try and convince you last holdouts.
Quick Hits: Animation, music, insane, large, super robot, twists, coming of age, mid-length
Plot: The show follows a young boy called Simon as he finds a little mecha called the Lagann while digging near his underground village. From there we follow his quest, with some buddies, to free the surface of the earth from the reign of the beast men. From there things get progressively bigger and more hype.
Pros: TTGL is sheer madness basically. Simon gets quite a bit of character growth, which is done really well as they provide reasons for this growth. The show looks damn fine all round, except for episode 4, with a stunning ending. The show also has a very clear art design so everything works together well. On top of that, all the characters are likeable and make you want to shout ‘Row Row fight the Power!’.
Cons: There is a weird middle section that is totally out of synch with the rest of the show and is a bit slow. Another problem is that the show does feel like it sometimes is being stretched out a tad to reach the 2 season quota of episodes, to me it seems like one of these shows that really needed to be 18-22 episodes long instead of 27. Also, episode 4 looks a bit odd because it has a different art style to the rest due to having a different director. Finally, it would have been nice to see the character of Yoko handled a tad better.
Conclusion - TTGL is a really strong overall package and is perfect for those times you just wanna whip out the popcorn and watch some awesome. Mobile Fighter G Gundam – dub advised (it is the perfect amount of camp for the show)
Quick Hits: Insane, dumb fun, full of heart, music, art direction, mecha designs, long
Plot: You thought Gundam was all serious war dramas and space operas didn’t you? Well let me introduce you to a little show call G Gundam. G Gundam is set in a world where the nations of earth have all their own space colony, that looks appropriately stereotypical. To stop there being wars all the time there is a tournament every 4 years called the Gundam Fight where each nation sends a Gundam to earth for what is essentially a royal rumble. The show follows Domon Kasshu, the Neo-Japan fighter (btw every country is Neo-XXXX for some reason). He, however, is only piloting the Gundam to search for his brother and to free his father, who is in custody for creating a super powerful Gundam called the Dark/Devil Gundam. From this basic premise we get a twisting tale that leads up to a fantastic last episode that is so full of heart it hurts.
Pros: In case it wasn’t obvious G Gundam is very silly. The pilots have snap-fitting latex suits, the gundams are based on national stereotypes, a horse pilots a horse shaped mecha at one point, and in general it is a lot of silly fun. This is great because the show knows it is silly, this self-awareness allows it to have proper emotional moments when the time is right. The art style is super strong, with some nice transitions from people to mechs. It has a great soundtrack that is surprisingly huge, it even has some Cantonese rap in there for good measure. G Gundam is a totally standalone show, as it is in its on universe, so you can watch it even if you’ve never tried a gundam before!
Cons: It does have some structure issues unfortunately as the last arc feels tacked on despite the fact it is really important, they could have cut the penultimate arc by a couple of episode to rectify this. Also, the first set of episodes feel and are fight of the week episodes, but they do serve a purpose by introducing important characters for later. Unfortunately, this isn’t apparent when you are first watching them so they feel like filler. Finally, if you can’t handle silly then this isn’t the show for you, sorry.
Conclusion - G Gundam is just a fun and wild ride with a ton of style. By the end you’ll be shouting the burning finger speech with Domon every time he does it, that should really tell you all you need to know about the show. Macross 7
Quick Hits: Music, hair, weird, J rock, long
Plot: The G Gundam of the Macross franchise. Like every Macross show it can be watched stand alone, however for maximum enjoyment you should watch the original SDF Macross or the Do You Remember Love film. In Macross 7 we follow a colony ship as it travels to find a new world. Along the way it is attacked by aliens and so we follow the conflict between the two sides. The hero of our story is a man by the name of Basara. He is the lead singer in a rock band called Fire Bomber and is also a pacifist. So when the aliens attack he hops in his mech, shoots speakers into the enemy, and then proceeds to sing at them. Yep, this show is nuts. As with all macross shows there is also a love triangle thrown in there for good measure, which provides some great moments.
Pros: The show is so different from anything else you will ever see that it can be quite refreshing. It has a bloody great J rock OST, I think I am correct in saying that the real life Fire Bomber is the most successful musical act to have come out of Macross. It has so great mechanical designs with speakers and stuff, which is neat. Plus Basara plays his guitar in the cockpit Personally I love the characters in the show but I know Basara is very much a love or hate guy.
Cons: It is a bit slow, it should never have been as long as it is, and there is quite a bit of reused footage, especially at the beginning. Quite a few people also find Basara to be insufferable, as I said I love him. Plus, you might get a tad tired of hearing ‘listen to my song’ over and over again.
Conclusion - All this makes Macross 7 a bit like marmite; either you love it or you hate it. So give it a go and see if it is your kind of thing. Yuusha-ou GaoGaiGar
Quick Hits: The most insane thing you will ever see, part episodically, long, music
Plot: Another super-robot show that is just bonkers. The setup is that aliens attack the earth, from underground, and then we fight them with a giant fucking mech. The show starts off as a monster of the week show but towards the end builds up to sheer madness.
Pros: If you thought TTGL was insane then buckle up chaps and chappettes because you ain’t seen nothing. This show is possibly the most insane mecha show ever made, for example in the first episode alone we have a sentient mecha lion, a boy who grows wings, a cyborg, a freeze ray made of fridges, a microwave cannon made of countertop microwaves, rocket rollerblades, a cape, a mecha train, and a guy saying "The percentages mean nothing, a courageous heart can make anything possible!". It is just lunacy. Our main character is a cyborg chap called Guy and he is your typical man’s man protagonist, like Domon Kasshu from G Gundam, so expect lots of shouting and arse kicking. The show also has a rocking OST, with some excellent character themes, and great mechanical designs, which is to be expected with a sunrise show.
Cons: the first half of the show is most of the week kinda stuff. It does serve to introduce you to the characters so that you care for them come the second half but it does get a bit tiresome. If you don’t like wacky combination mechs then you might not like the final form. Also, it might be a bit too insane for its own good, occasionally it was a bit of a sensory overload.
Conclusion – Insanity, pure insane fun. There is definitely a reason why GaoGaiGar is sometimes called the King of Super Robot shows, with all the pros and cons that entails. I Want Something Mature Macross Plus – Dub advised (Brian Cranston!)
Quick Hits: Animation, music, mature, AI, relationships, short
Plot: Macross plus is probably the most standalone entry into the macros franchise, which makes it a great entry point to macross. The basic story is that our MC is a bit of a reckless chap so he gets reassigned to a test facility so they can get him out the way and so that he can push the prototypes to the limit. At this test facility there are two prototypes for the next generation of Valkyrie (the mech/planes that the armed forces use in Macross). These two prototypes are in competition. Unfortunately, the test pilot for the other prototype is an old friend of out MC with whom he had a serious falling out with after a certain incident involving their other friend. As fate would have it this third friend is also in the area managing her AI pop idol (yeah Macross is weird). So the show boils down to the three of them trying to rectify their relationship.
Pros: The show handles this damaged relationship in quite a mature manner, which is nice, and this is helped by them all being adults. It isn’t a stupid thing, like someone stealing the strawberry off someone else’s cake, that caused the rift, which makes it more realistic. The show itself is drop dead gorgeous in the way that only 90s OVAs with a ton of funding could be, just look at this shit! The soundtrack is great, Yoko Kanno was pretty much told to do whatever so we ended up with a trippy electronic OST. There are some also some trippy visuals to go along with the soundtrack at points. The show is really easy to get into because it is only 4 40 minute episodes long, so you can at least spare 40mins to try out ¼ of the show.
Cons: There isn’t more! The only real gripe I have with it is that resolution of the rift could have been better. It is still pretty good but it could have been better. Also, there could have been some better explanation of the AI stuff, though a lot of it is inferred so you always know what is happening.
Conclusion – If Topgun with a love triangle and some AI, plus amazing visuals and audio, appeals to you then check it out. Gundam 0080: War in the pocket – Dub advised (it is just a really solid dub with some great performances, shout out to the drunk woman on the phone!)

Plot: Despite featuring probably the youngest protagonist of any of these show, 0080 is one of the more adult shows you’ll find. The show itself is a side story set during the same period as the original Gundam 0079, which makes it an excellent entry point into UC Gundam. The show itself follows a young boy called Alfred, who is 11. After a brief skirmish occurs in his space colony, which is neutral, he befriends a Zeon soldier. called Bernie, who is there on a secret mission. From there we follow Alfred as he experiences war first hand and it is soul crushing.
Pros: The show is a 6 episode long ova so it has some amazing animation, long live the bottomless pit of gunpla funds! The action is top tier, though sparse, and super brutal. The show has some really cool mechanical designs too, like the Alex and the Kampfer. Despite the brief run time you feel like you really know all the major characters by the end, making it super powerful. The bonding scenes between Bernie and Alfred are especially cute. A lot of Gundam fans consider 0080 to be the high point of the franchise and, given how much great Gundam there is, that is quite the compliment. Oh and it is a set at Christmas, just in case that appeals to you.
Cons: Honestly the only slight downside is the ost, which is that typical 80s synth. It doesn’t hurt the show much, but it certainly doesn’t benefit it. I hate to praise a show so much but 0080 is amazing.
Conclusion – If you want a near perfect war story that is also a great entry point to Gundam then 0080 is the show for. Also, hamburgers! Flag

Plot: So Flag is very very different from any other anime you’ll see. The story itself follows two freelance photographers/journalists (one male and one female) as they document the peace process, one as an imbedded reporter and one working with the rest of the media, in a war torn country. The show itself is clearly heavily influenced by the wars in Nepal, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Pros: The characters are all adults who behave as people would and the organisations in the story have clear and reasonable motives for their actions. The show also makes some very astute comments on the nature of modern conflict and reporting on it. You might also have noticed Flag’s unique art style. Almost the entire show is presented from the point of view of various in universe cameras and screens in a documentary style, the cuts between scenes are often done by the closing and opening up of new video files. This helps deal with the fact that they seem to have had a small budget, as it allows them to use a fuck ton of stills without it seeming odd, and lets the bits that are animated to be animated quite well. This is also helped by the fact that the show doesn’t really have that much action, it is far more realistic in having long moments of down time with short frantic bursts of action. I kind of feel like I’m gushing here but I finished the series yesterday (at the time of writing) and god damn that ending is fantastic.
Cons: Unfortunately, the mechs aren’t the best cg out there but they aren’t worst thing in the world. If you are looking for lots of action, then this isn’t the show for you. It is a slow burner, which is perfect for the story it is telling. Outside of the two leads, you don’t really get to know the characters too well. You know their general personalities and a few quirks but there is still a distance. Mind you, seeing as the story is only set over a month that might have been deliberate. Finally, this is another one of those shows that just lacks that undefinable spark that separates the truly great shows.
Conclusion - Overall, Flag isn’t going to go down as an all-time great but it is a very solid and very adult show that everybody should give a shot. Quick Hits: Environmentalism, animation, art style
Plot: We start off at the end of the world and a very watery end at that. Sea levels have risen and sentient beastmen from the sea are attacking humans. In all this an old vet is called back into service aboard the titular submarine in order for them to carry out a last ditch plan. From here we learn about both sides in the conflict and how might not be what they first appear to be.
Pros: Grey morality everywhere! This show gives everyone a good reason for why they fight, making things nice and complicated. Sharkman is great, saying more would be spoilers. It has a really cool art style, the beastmen look really cool. The animation is really good for the most part.
Cons: I didn’t find any of the human characters hugely interesting outside of our MC. There is some super wonky CGI, this shit is dire sadly. The OST is a mixed bag for me personally. The tracks are pretty much all good in their own right but I personally feel that the jazzier tracks don’t quite fit right. Though that could just be me.
Conclusion – A short series with an interesting story and art design but some wonky cg and some ill-fitting songs. I want a thriller Gundam 00 – Yes I know it may not fit precisely in as a thriller but I thought it the best fit.
Quick Hits: Terrorism, animation, realistic future, long
Plot: In the future, different nations have united to form 3 different nations, all three of which have access to solar technology. However, those countries that were once reliant on fossil fuels are now in poverty. These countries are engaged in years of warfare and internal strife over the control of solar energy. In the midst of this, a paramilitary group called Celestial Beings vow to use their supremely technologically advanced mobile suits called Gundams, in order to end war (pretty ironic eh?). The story follows Celestial Being and their attempts to do so.
Pros: It feels like a very relevant commentary on a modern socio-political world which was very heavily influenced by the events of 9/11. Great action scenes. Feels more rooted in realism compared to other entries in the Gundam Franchise. Gundam Meisters feel very fleshed out (your liking of them will vary though). 1st Season- feels more terrorism based, 2nd Season- God based, Movie- Human nature based. Animation is really good and the mobile suit designs are really awesome. It also has some interesting themes with religion, terrorism and environmentalism being discussed.
Cons: A lot of focus on Setsuna (the MC) and his mobile suit (his suit gets massive upgrades compared to everyone else) and not enough on his comrades. Series can feel incredibly inconsistent. The movie is pretty terrible honestly. Antagonists can be quite boring. Can be a bit too melodramatic at times. Saji and Louise are boring and their exclusion from the series would not hurt.
Conclusion – 00 is a modern version of Wing that is better in almost every way. It does have some problems but is really worth a watch if that style of show is your thing. Plot: A standalone spinoff of the VOTOMS series. The show is a revenge action-thriller as the MC takes down the people who got his squad mates killed. The show is interesting as the MC doesn’t pilot a Mecha, instead he fights mechs on foot.
Pros: The show is fairly unique in its setup as I can only think of one other show that features our protagonist fighting mechs on foot but even he eventually gets in a mech. The show has a really grimy and earthy aesthetic that suits the story to a T. Our main character is a bit of a badass, unsurprisingly, and seeing what clever plan he’ll come up with this time is always fun. Mellowlink is animated at an above average rate, with no CG. It won’t blow your mind but it is certainly a step up from the average series. The show is a short and simple revenge tale that really works, and is a good intro to the enormous VOTOMS franchise.
Cons: The art style and the music are very of their time, which may put off some people (for reasons I still fail to understand. The somewhat episodically nature of the show can also be a turn off as I know episodic shows are not everyone’s cup of tea. Finally, the villains can be a bit too much ‘we are the evil dudes mwuhahaha’. Though there are some quite interesting ones.
Conclusion – Mellowlink is a simple revenge tale that gets the job done. It is gritty, dirty and totally badass. Basically Rambo fighting mechs with a huge gun. RideBack
Quick Hits: College aged, mecha design, terrorism, small mechs
Plot: The world was controlled by an evil government but they were overthrown by a rebel group that has now replaced them. In Japan the new University year is about to begin and our MC, Rin, is about to start. She is an ex-ballet dancer that was forced to quite due to injury and is missing it in a major way. While at Uni she discovers the RideBack club. RideBacks are a motorbike-mecha hybrid that have yet to gain any real popularity among civilians. She tries one out and loves it. It helps that her ballet training helps her to become a good rider. From here a lot of stuff happens with the government and rebel elements in Japan. This is another one that isn’t really a thriller but this is the section it best fits in.
Pros: It has a university aged student hooray! That makes like 4 shows ever? Jokes aside, it is nice to having characters from such an under represented age group. It also means that you don’t have that voice in the back of your mid asking ‘where the hell are these children’s parents?’. Rin herself is a pretty good character with some interesting moments. The side characters are basic but solid. The mechanical design of the Rideback is really cool as there is nothing else like it and with some minor adjustments one could see these things existing, figuring out how the arms would be controlled is the issue.
Cons: Some things in the show are left unexplained, most importantly the details of a major incident are never really revealed. On top of that is a bit of a stretch for things to escalate as they do in the show, you have to just go with it. Rideback really wants you to care about a character called [Suzuri]9 http://imgur.com/AHxTZSw) and I’ll be honest I found her insufferable. Finally, some people might have issue with the CG used for the RideBacks. I got used to it but I have to admit it isn’t wonderful.
Conclusion – RideBack is very different from other mecha shows with its mech and characters. It is a fun little show but it is lacking is a couple of places that really hold it back from being something special. Bokurano
Quick Hits: Sad, mid length, character drama, OP
Plot: 15 kids on holiday find a guy who is developing a robot game and he wants them to test it. Needless to say things are not what they seem to be. Really the robot could be just about anything, it is just a plot device to tell this bleak tale.
Pros: The characters really are the high point of this show, this show could also be considered as just a character drama, each has their own voice and story to tell. The Op is also worth noting as it is pretty damn good.
Cons: The visuals are solid but nothing to write home about, not that it matters much for this kinda show. Very depressing, which is turn-off for some. It could be argued that the characters maybe act a little too old for their age, but this is anime so you should be used to it.

Pros: The show has almost every single damn trope in the book. It has mecha, high school, tsundere, child soldiers, hot springs, beaches, blue haired girls, an evil guy who just won’t die, super natural stuff, and more! Some might think this a bad this a bad thing but it really isn’t as almost every single one of these tropes is pulled off to perfection and the combination of them al gives it a fresh feeling. The two different sides of the show, serious mecha and high school comedy, should cause some serious tonal whiplash but, in my opinion, this doesn’t happen because the main character is this serious child soldier the whole time, hence the fish out of water stuff. He is the connecting thread that confirms the seriousness of half the show and the comedy of the other half, it is kind of genius really. Speaking of the main character, I love him to bits. He is just so lovable! The main gal is pretty great too, my kind of tsundere. The show itself is very pretty to look at, especially the second and third seasons. One important note to make is that the entire second season is a comedy show, basically it takes the high school bits and runs rampant with them. This is not a bad thing though as ‘Full Metal panic? Fumoffu’ is bloody hilarious and is certainly up there as one of the best anime comedies of all time.
Cons: Sadly, the music is mostly average outside of a few tunes. Another negative that must be noted is that the show sadly doesn’t end, in fact it leaves on a big ass cliff hanger. However, we are getting a new Full Metal Panic series in the near future so hopefully they continue where the original left off or cover the whole thing from the beginning. If you don’t like anime that is very well…anime then this is not the show for you.
Conclusion - So if you want a show stuffed with all the tropes that is somehow pretty great hit up Full Metal Panic! Code Geass

Plot: Code Geass is yet another show with all the tropes that somehow works. The show follows one Lelouch as he attempts to free Japan, from the iron grip of the Britannian Empire, with his magical hypnotic eyes. It does get a bit more complicated than that, especially in the second series but this is still the basic plot.
Pros: The show has some great mecha action, with a large variety of different weapons and abilities, and it has some great Gundam shout outs, in the form of Kallen ‘Kasshu’ Stadtfeld and the Char kick. The story is a great thrill ride with some clever twists in the first season and dumb but fun ones in the second season. Most of the characters are fun a loveable, especially one Orange, and I personally love their character designs, though I can see why the noodle nature of the designs might put people off. The mechanical designs are pretty great, as per usual for Sunrise, and of course they are animated fantastically. The series has a fairly strong ost, not the best in the world but there are some really memorable tracks, and some great OP songs. Additionally, most people agree that the show has a fantastic ending, though I personally fall in the opposite camp of thinking it is a bit silly and stupid (Sorry!).
Cons: A big issue with the show is the entire second season. The second season was clearly being written as they went along, and I believe that interviews confirm this though I may be wrong, so it has a lot of really stupid twists and stuff in it. That is not to say the show isn’t fun, as it remains entertaining throughout its run. However, if you are a person with a low acceptance of bullshit then Cods Geass may not be for you.
Conclusion - Code Geass is a great thrill ride that is fairly clever in the first half and is fun but dumb in the second half. As long as you can just go with the second half’s absurdity then you’ll be golden. I Want an Epic Space opera Gundam 0079 + Universal Century Gundam main story

Plot: We start with the big daddy of mecha shows: Gundam. The original mobile suit gundam is a fantastic show that follows Amuro and the crew of the White Base as the fight the Zeon during the One Year War. 0079 is very much a ‘war is hell’ type story, with various characters breaking down or running away.
Pros: Depite having mechs 0079 is in many ways one of the more realistic war anime out there. On the whole the individual soldiers on each side are good people fighting for their freedoms and their perceived good, while it is the leaders who are the bad people with ideological motives. This combined with the war is hell aspect actually gives the show a great deal of grounding. 0079 is also noted for its fantastic characters. You get great characters like Bright Noa, Amuro Ray, Sayla Mass, Ramba Ral, and of course the one and only Char Aznable. All these characters have complex motivations and influences that make them interesting. On the visual side 0079 has its ups and downs. The character designs are fantastic, with each character having a distinct facial design and body, and a lot of the visual directing is fantastic, especially the newtype sequences. It has some fantastic mechanical designs, such as the Zaku and the titular Gundam, though there are some terrible ones as well, more on that later. Another area of strength is the sound design of the show with an ost filled with classics and some great sfx.
Cons: Unfortunately, some of the mechanical designs look a bit pants, looking at you Zakrello. In addition, a lot of the non-mecha mechanical designs are very much of their time, especially the zeon fighter planes. As an admitted Gundam fanboy I enjoy the silliness of some the mechanical designs, as the Gundam franchise has always had a bit of a silly side, but I can certainly see why some people would be put off. Also, some of the animation is a bit wonky to say the least, though it does feature some fantastic animation at times especially in the movies. The whole newtype stuff could put people off as it strays away from the more real robot side of gundam.
Conclusion – 0079 is one of the most influential anime of all time and it isn’t hard to see why. The show has a fantastic plot and some excellent characters. It also laid down the foundation of the real robot genre. You can watch 0079 in two different ways: the series or the movie trilogy. The series provides better character work and feels grand because it is a long show but it does feature some wonky animation, a bit of a rushed ending, and a middle that I felt was slow. The movie trilogy fixes pretty much all of these problems and is generally accepted as an equally good way of viewing the story, even if the pacing in the first film is a bit off. So go watch 0079, it is great! Once you have finished 0079 you can move onto Zeta, ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack. I won’t go into detail here but these series/film are also great, though ZZ can be a bit hit or miss for people. SDF Macross + Do You Remember Love?
Plot: Aliens attacking, pop idol singing, and a mech pilot stuck in a love triangle. This is pretty much all you need to know about Macross, but don’t worry I will explain more. The SDF Macross is a space ship that humanity repairs and as it makes its maiden voyage aliens attack. The Macross then warps to escape and ends up at the other side of the solar system. From here we follow it as it makes its way back to earth and as it tries to stop the alien threat. However, this is not all! Alongside this military plot we have the plot of an idol who becomes a huge celebrity on the Macross and her romance with a pilot. Yep, Macross is a weird franchise, but that is why we love it.
Pros: The mechanical designs, though, are great. The transformable Valkyrie is a classic of mech design, with it being a humanoid shape one moment and a fighter jet the next. The OST is also pretty fab, with the op being one of the best things ever. It has some really enjoyable characters, such as the genius pilot Max, that keep you invested. It has unique twist, with its themes around culture that provide for interesting viewing.
Cons: Unfortunately, the show has not aged well visually. It looks really bad at times, eyeless people are not uncommon, and the animation is quite stiff. This does mean there are some really well animated fight sequences but I don’t really think it was worth it. The show also suffers from the first arc having a bit of a lull in the middle and a poor second arc that didn’t really need to be there. Luckily, all the problems with the series are fixed by the movie version, ‘Do You Remember Love’. The film just looks amazing and it sound amazing too. It has so many iconic shots in it that it hurts! The film also changes the story quite a bit, keeping it fresh for viewers of the series. Sadly, for the sake of brevity, the show cuts out a lot of character moments, especially with Max.
Conclusion - Overall, both the series and the film are great, but weird, space operas. The film is most definitely the better of the two but really should be seen after the series to get the most out of it. Continued in the comments

TL;DR - Make Composite armor in add-on kits degrade, Autocannons nerf traverse when damaging the engine, and buff ERA so it gives slightly more resistance against angled AP hits. Above T6, you have infinite DPM AFVs that are both ineffective against MBTs in many cases and unforgiving against any other class, while Challenger is the only tank with enough side armor to play aggressively in high tier MBT. I don't think the traverse should be nerved until everything handles like low-tier WoT. So my suggestion:
Autocannon hits to engines stun the hull and turret traverse, so a constant stream of hits into an MBT's engine will impair it's ability to turn and engage it so long as it's being hit. Merkava has a front-mount engine, which is a problem but should work for most MBTs with weak engine armor. This would make sense with a decrease in AFV DPM so they don't butcher non-MBTs so badly.
Give CR1 and CR2 applique instead of ERA, nerf their base armor. Make composite add-on armor degrade when hit repeatedly (not the MBT's base armor.) There's been some evidence that the CR2 isn't carrying ERA to begin with. Source 2. Looking for a better source at the moment but that's an overview of the idea. Soaking up several sabot hits with impunity is not a small advantage, and having armor degrade could make gun penetration more of a balancing factor in high tier where it's mostly weak spot pen or no pen.
Give "Heavy ERA" at T8, T9, T10 a higher AP modifier. Take away the passive AP bonus the spent ERA mountings themselves leave, but give them slightly higher AP modifiers so tanks with them can actually maneuver with some margin of error against sabot hits. Autocannons should just ignore the ERA. (ERA is generally armored against shrapnel, small arms and autocannon fire to begin with.) Kontakt-5 and advanced ERA types can stop KE rounds. NERA can also have some effect against KE. Currently the T-90's turret mounts Kontakt-5 capable of defending against M829 APFSDS, but it's not destroyed after a hit, presumably for balance reasons.

I posted a similar thread almost exactly one year ago, except I'd made the mistake of cluttering the list with many sequels. This time, this list excludes any anime from the top 1000 in popularity on MyAnimeList.net (rather than 500) as well as sequels, special episodes and tied-in movies so that only first seasons, in airing order, appear on the list. I did, however, try to take sequels into account when providing the episode count, though I probably regret this decision because there are a ton of series I know nothing about. I've included the scores, popularity, episode count and starting years into a table so that you can browse the table however you want by clicking on the headers. Even though I haven't watched it myself, I'm a little bit sad for Initial D being off this list since only the first season hardly makes it into the top 1000, so here's my nod the series. Also excuse my lack of knowledge of the Gundam and Macross universes, because I may have passed over series I thought were related. Hit me up if I've made a mistake or forgotten a series!
